If you haven't already done so, read the forums to see the range of thinking on the rear end tear repair. For example:

This car has zero track time, and that's why I never made the change. Also, based on my experience, there's always the risk of a mechanic causing other problems in doing the repair. Let sleeping M Coupes lie, I say! I just re-examined under the car - no cracks.

Checked tire tread depth: fronts have lots of depth [about 7-7.5 / 32ths]; rears are near the wear bars [about 4.5-5 / 32ths]. So, more wear on rears, as expected. However, the tread design is such that one could drive well past the rear wear bars and still have little risk of hydroplaning. These tires are arguably the very best there is for wet driving, with nearly the same grip in the wet as in the dry [and great grip in the dry]. [Eagle F1s – Ultra-performance tires]

I replaced the original rear view mirror with a real one, because the electronic dimmer was ineffective - as most recommend on the lists. Broader field of view as a bonus. I never wired the additional lighting that's in the new mirror.

The rear wiper doesn't operate. That wasn't important to me, and I was too lazy to fix it. But I have the entire shop manual that shows how to check it out.

Operation of the clutch intermittently produces a squeak/groan. Not a symptom indicating something mechanically unsound, and probably a little lube in the pedal would solve it.

Oil changes were done by me with the specified lube [Mobil 1] and the BMW filter more frequently than necessary - with bolts tightened by torque wrench [not 2-3 grunts, like all shop mechanics do].

26 mpg at 75-80 mph [it's very low and sleek!]

My personal driving complaints:

1. The seat doesn't recline enough for my low back issues, so I sometimes stuff a rag behind me for lumbar support. Drove it to Myrtle Beach & back without pain, however.

2. Insufficient shock rebound damping to suit me: compared to newer performance cars (including the Mini), evident to me in turn-in and turn exit [based on on/off ramp driving].

3. The engine spins fast at speed - when there is so much low torque that could easily handle another, higher gear [fixed in 2001 with a 6th gear added]
